When is the application deadline?
Applications to be considered for the 2008 Freshman College class are due by April 25, 2008.
It is in your best interest to apply as soon as
possible as admission to the program is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
|
How do I know you have received my application?
You will receive a confirmation email soon after you submit the application. If the email is not in your inbox or junk mail, please call 706-583-0724 or email fcse@uga.edu.
To attend the Freshman College, do I need to reapply to UGA for Summer 2008 if I have already been offered admission for Fall 2008?
No, the Freshman College accepts applications from regularly admitted students who are offered admission to UGA for either Fall 2008 or Summer 2008. If you are accepted for Fall 2008 and plan to attend the Freshman College, we will change your matriculation date from fall to summer to reflect your participation in the program. You do not need to reapply to UGA for Summer 2008.
If I participate in the Freshman College, do I still have to pay the $200 Commitment Deposit to attend UGA?
Yes, to attend UGA, you must pay the Commitment Deposit by May 1, 2008.
When will I find out if I have been admitted into the Freshman College?
We will begin admitting students into the Freshman College in mid-February of 2008. After that time, submitted applications are typically processed within three weeks of receiving them in our office. You will be notified by mail and email about the status of your application.
Can I check the status of my Freshman College application online?
No, you are currently unable to verify admission to the Freshman College online.
If I am admitted to the Freshman College, how do I reserve my space?
If you are admitted, you will reserve your space in the Freshman College by paying a non-refundable initial payment of $300. This payment is applied toward the $1,300 Freshman College Program Fee. Your initial payment due date is based on your date of acceptance into the program. The remaining $1,000 of the Freshman College Program Fee is due on or before June 2, 2008. To reserve your spot in FCSE it is in your best interest to pay your full Program Fee as soon as possible as Freshman College fills up quickly.
Fees
Can I use my summer financial aid award to pay the $1,000 final payment?
Yes, if you have been awarded financial aid for the summer session, you can make arrangements to apply those funds to your Freshman College final payment by contacting the Freshman College Office at (706) 583-0724.
Where should I send my final payment?
You must pay your final payment through your UGA student account. Information regarding your student account and payment instructions can be found at http://www.bursar.uga.edu.
Will my $1,300 program fee be refunded if I choose not to attend?

When will I receive my HOPE check for books?
During the online tuition payment process students have the option of allowing the book stipend to pay for additional fees that HOPE does not cover. If a student does not opt to have the book stipend pay for these fees then the student’s check will be mailed to his/her permanent address.
Academics
Do I have to take 6 semester hours of coursework in the Freshman College?
Yes, all Freshman College students are required to sign up for 6 semester hours from our curriculum. These 6 semester hours will consist of a 3-hour core class and 3 hours of elective credit from the selection of elective courses we offer. You are not permitted to withdraw from your FCSE classes.
When will I register for my Freshman College courses?
Freshman College course registration will take place during your UGA First-Year Orientation on June 30-July 1, 2008. You will also register for your fall classes at this time. Advisement and registration assistance will be provided.
What if I don’t get the core class I want during Freshman College?
All of the core courses offered in the Freshman College are also offered at UGA throughout the academic year. Because Freshman College classes are small, seating in each class is limited. Should you not get your choice during the summer, you will have the opportunity to take the class in the future. All of our courses are exceptional and provide academic credit toward graduation.
What academic support services are available to assist me with my classes?
The Division of Academic Enhancement will provide a variety of support services throughout the program such as tutoring, academic programming and study groups.
How intense is Freshman College?
Freshman College is demanding. Because it is so compressed, you are generally exposed to one week's worth of information in each Freshman College class period. A considerable amount of homework to accompany the fast-paced coursework should also be expected. The best advice for students is to be ready to be challenged. It may feel overwhelming at times, but it is great preparation for the normal school year.
Do I have to attend the First-Year Orientation on June 30-July 1, 2008?
Yes, you are required to attend this First-Year Orientation session if you want to attend the Freshman College. This session is specifically reserved for Freshman College students. You do not need to register for Orientation if you are in the Freshman College.
Beyond Class Programs
What if I have an outside requirement during Freshman College?
If you know you have a prior commitment submit the conflict before the program begins. Please submit conflicts to fcse@uga.edu. If the Freshman College staff is aware of conflicts we can work out your Ropes Course schedule. You will select your Beyond Class programs so have your personal calendar available to ensure you do not have conflicts. Excuses will not be granted after the program has started unless it is deemed an emergency.
Do I have activities to attend on the weekends?
Yes, expect many of the Beyond Class social programs to be held on weekends. In addition, you will automatically be assigned to a Ropes Course along with your hall mates on a weekend afternoon. It is in your best interest not to make any alternative plans until you have scheduled your Beyond Class programs at Orientation.
If I miss a Beyond Class program will it affect my grade?
Yes, to ensure you are getting the most of your Freshman College experience we require you to attend 6 Beyond Class programs and one Ropes Course section. These programs count for 10% of your grade in either UNIV 1102 or UNIV 1113.
Can I change my Beyond Class schedule after the registration period has ended?
No, you must come prepared to your registration session with your personal schedule. This will ensure no mistakes and a clear idea of any commitments you have outside of Freshman College. When the registration session ends on July 1st at 6 p.m. you will not be able to change your schedule. So choose wisely!
Housing
Can I participate and not live in Russell Hall?
No, if you choose to participate in the Freshman College, you are required to live in Russell Hall for the duration of the program (even if you have received an exemption from on campus housing through the Department of University Housing for the 2008-2009 academic year).
Can I select my roommate for the Freshman College?
Every reasonable effort will be made to honor mutual roommate requests as long as both students are attending the Freshman College.
What happens if I want to live with my friend who is not in the Freshman College?
Your room assignment in the Freshman College takes priority over a housing request to room with a student who is not in the program. Your housing assignment for the summer and the academic year will be in Russell Hall.
When do I find out my room and roommate assignment?
You will receive your room and roommate assignment in June.
Can I move to another residence hall after the Freshman College?
Your housing assignment for the Freshman College will also be your housing assignment for the academic year. In the event that you wish to change rooms or halls once the fall semester has started, the request process begins at a date set by the Housing Assignments Office. Hall and room transfers are granted on the basis of space availability, type of request, and submission date of the request. For more information, please visit http://www.uga.edu/housing and click on "Waiting Lists Sign-Up".
Can I attend the FCSE in the summer and participate in the Learning Communities during the academic year?
No, students are not able to participate in both programs. Freshman College students live in Russell Hall for the summer and the academic year. Learning Community participants are required to live in Creswell Hall during the academic year. Because each program is limited to a particular residence hall, you are only able to participate in one.
Miscellaneous
Do I need to sign up for a meal plan for Freshman College?
No, the cost of a 7-day meal plan is included in your Freshman College Program Fee. You are encouraged to investigate the meal plans offered during the academic year. For more information, visit the Food Services Web site at http://www.uga.edu/foodservice.
Can I bring my car to the FCSE?
|
Yes, prior to your arrival for the FCSE, we will mail you instructions for purchasing a Freshman College parking permit. Since the FCSE
permit is different from a regular summer parking permit, you should wait until you receive instructions before making a purchase for the
summer session. You will also receive detailed instructions from Parking Services regarding parking for the academic year. Please follow those instructions carefully. |
What if I have additional questions?
If you have questions that are not answered by this Web site, please call Melissa Garber at (706) 583-0724, or send an e-mail to fcse@uga.edu.
